SFBAC Climbing LogoThe SFBAC High Adventure Team is offering a Climbing & Rappel Instructor Program Rock Climbing and Rappelling Training

National BSA Standards for individuals supervising climbing/rappel activities have stringent requirements. This program is structured to provided the highest quality training in not only climbing, but in risk/site management, rappel protocol, Leave No Trace and practical, safe anchoring techniques.

Two courses are offered:

Rock Climbing Instructor Course

INDOOR CLIMBING / RAPPEL INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

April 26, 2003

This one-day informative workshop is designed to train instructors in the BSA’s “Climb on Safely” and how to effectively supervise climbing / rappel activities at the SFBAC’s indoor climbing rock. Individuals who satisfactorily demonstrate the skills necessary to be an instructor after completing the workshop will receive an “Indoor Climbing Instructor” status.

Prerequisites: None

Fee: $45

Dates: Saturday, 8a .m. – 5 p.m.

Location: Youth Leadership Training Center, 1001 Davis St., San Leandro

Climbing and Rappel Instructor Course

April 26 and May 3-4, 2003

This is the essential training course to complete in order to become a BSA Climbing / Rappel Instructor. Three eight hour sessions are spent on

  • Proper Gear Use
  • Risk/Site Management
  • Safety Instruction
  • Leave No Trace
  • Practical
  • Safe Anchoring
  • Climbing Technique
  • Rappel Protocol.

Individuals satisfactorily demonstrating their instructional, management and anchoring skills may enroll for the Climbing/Rappel Instructor Exam

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of climbing gear, documented experience climbing/rappelling for recreation, guiding as a professional, or as an Instructor in Training.

Fee: $125

Dates: Saturday, April 26, 2003., 8am - 5pm
Field Days: Saturday May 3 and Sunday May 4, 2003, 8am - 5pm,

Both indoor and outdoor sessions are required. Indoor sessions are at the Youth Leadership Training Center in San Leandro, and outdoor sessions are at Mount Diablo.

Climbing / Rappel Instructor Exam

The exam phase to become a SFBAC BSA Climbing/Rappel Instructor is a one-day evaluation of a candidate's instructional, management and anchoring skills. The candidate will be spending a good portion of the day demonstrating these skills in a simulated field teaching environment.

The exam will cover:

Group & Individual Management

Maintain order for:

  • safety
  • good learning environment

Site Management

Establish and maintain

  • safety protocols
  • hazards
  • helmet zones
  • bouldering rules

Climbing & Rappel Instruction

Convey your essential knowledge of.

  • proper gear use
  • safety protocol and checks
  • knots
  • anchoring

Establish a climbing/rappel site

  • Showing knowledge of proper gear use
  • Using correct knots & back-ups
  • Creating required redundancy needed for a margin of safety

Leave No Trace

Convey your concern for Leave No Trace by:

  • sharing the principles of Leave No Trace
  • setting a standard for the group

Prerequisites: Satisfactorily completing the Climbing/Rappel Instructor Course.
